Life Enhancement Center History
Canyon Ranch in Tucson became very successful within a few years as the word about healthy living exploded into public consciousness. As time went on, more and more guests who came to Canyon Ranch were already living healthy lives – they were choosing a healthy vacation, as opposed to needing one.
Canyon Ranch Founder Mel Zuckerman began to worry that the guests he was most concerned about – the desperate, out-of-shape, stressed-out type of person he had been when he’d had his A-ha! moment at a California fat farm – might feel out of place among all these healthy people and give up – as he once had.
As a result, he and his wife, Enid Zuckerman, and their business partner, Jerry Cohen, decided to build a sheltered environment within Canyon Ranch in Tucson, where guests who needed to develop healthier lifestyles would find every possible resource for lasting change, including a warm, supportive group atmosphere and Canyon Ranch’s most inspiring professionals and staff. The Life Enhancement Center® opened its doors in 1988.
At the beginning, the Life Enhancement Center offered two-week programs devoted specifically to weight loss. It soon became clear that the structured nature of the program, combined with the intimacy and comfort of the Life Enhancement Center – where participants share homelike gathering spaces, plus their own gyms, locker rooms and a dining room – would benefit guests with concerns other than weight. The weeklong Life Enhancement Program® expanded to embrace general lifestyle education. Thousands of people are living better today because they came to this inspirational place.
The highly effective Life Enhancement Center preventive health program is currently being adapted by the Canyon Ranch Institute®, for residents of one of the poorest neighborhoods in North America, in the South Bronx. This model program is a realization of Enid and Mel Zuckerman’s dedication to inspiring positive lifestyle change in all people.
